Character Info
Name: Exxis
Canon: Original Character
Canon Point: After recent cyber attacks shut down electrical grids across the southern coast of the US and he was investigating potential domestic cells responsible.
Age: 23
Background:
Protechnoism is the name of the game, the new era of science and biology melding together to the point one may question which is which. Man becoming God. But with the rise and spread of advanced technology so goes the rise and spread of conflict. For where there is technology there are weapons of war.
The year is 2085, the world is like our own, if slightly adjacent to it, and it’s been 15 years since the rise of the Greymarch, a terrorist organization built of mercenary divisions that sell their services to the highest bidder, destabilizing regions, killing business executives and maintaining or upturning the status quo as they are paid. They don’t care where it is or who is in the crossfire, the Greymarch moves on. Terror as a business model has never been so profitable.
One of the first such attacks that they took credit for was the bombing of the Farrow Memorial International Airport, after the landing of the plane carrying the Ambassador of Savalia which was already dealing with civil unrest with neighboring countries during a highly intense national election season. The Ambassador was gravely injured in the bombing but survived. Many civilians using the airport that day were not as lucky, including the parents of DeMarcus Kalu. They had been returning home from a family vacation and awaiting their luggage at the turnstile when the bomb went off. His parents were killed and he was gravely injured, critically burning his face and right eye, losing his right leg and arm, and his left arm so badly damaged emergency surgery was needed to save it (some of it was still amputated below the elbow).
As per the wishes of his parents, DeMarcus was put into the custody of his godmother, Captain Evita Lansheer, who approved her godson for an experimental procedure that would graft cyberorganic prosthesis and regenerative bio-nanite cells to his body and into his vital organs that had been heavily damaged in the attack. This was a classified operation, with test subjects needed to see how well the prostheses would do on still growing bodies like those of children and teenagers (people with still developing bodies). DeMarcus survived the procedure and recovered in months what should have taken years of rehabilitation but as part of the agreement he would receive specialized training.
Because of the classified nature of the program and the Department of Enhanced Tactical Security covering all of his medical expenses for the study, he was given a classified designation of Enhanced Cybernetic Operative (ECO) 1763XS (which he shortened to “Exxis” himself). He wasn’t allowed to be seen or spoken to by anyone outside of the program, government officials with high enough clearance levels, and his godmother, who agreed to a transfer into DEnTac to not only watch over her godson, but also to help with the training of the other subjects of the program. Exxis was 10 when he was admitted into the ECO program to save his life and became a full agent for DEnTac when he was 18.
He’s been part of a five-man squad investigating connections that the Greymarch have within the US and their connection to the domestic terrorist cells that have been fueling unrest across the country, Canada, and Mexico. His team even managed to prevent a local solo cell from being recruited by Greymarch after an undercover mission and captured a Greymarch liaison in the process. But this achievement might come as a Pyrrhic victory as a month after arresting the liaison, who still has not provided any information, a coordinated cyber attack hits the southern coast of the US. The electrical grid gets shut down, accidents are happening across the states, and Exxis and his team are tasked with investigating two anonymous cells thought to be part of the attack and how they got the tech to create an eight state-wide blackout.
Personality:
Smart, earnest, righteous, optimistic and self-conscious sums up Exxis nicely. He enjoys spelunking, Active Literature (books that you read aloud and as you read the scene is acted out by a hologram in front of you) and video games (of the VR variety), but he loves his job most of all. It’s not a job he thinks he would have chosen for himself, but there is a strong sense of purpose for him in being a DEnTac agent. If what he does can help in any way to make sure no other child suffers from what he went through, then he will more than gladly go on any mission to achieve that. Losing his parents hurt him a great deal and he doesn’t know what he would have done if not for his godmother, Evita. You know, besides probably be dead or trapped in a bed somewhere in a special care facility.
He does not make friends easily, primarily because he feels self-conscious about his looks. Because of the early model of many of his original prostheses and the cybernetic implants, parts of him don’t look or feel as natural as people who receive less severe implants or prostheses years later as the technology improved. His one eye is obviously a replacement, his face in particular looks like he’s been through an accident and people who pay closer attention notice the distinctions between the two sides of his face. One of the reasons he grew his hair out is that it allows him to hide himself when loose when he’s feeling particularly shy, so people pay more attention to his locs than to his face. It also was one part of his body he knew was still natural, as it continued to grow, and he takes great care of it because it symbolizes to him that he’s not entirely machine. But he has trouble talking to people his own age that weren’t part of the program with him and can stumble over his words. Sometimes he stares too hard without meaning to, or his cybernetic implants cause his emotional reactions to be more exaggerated, and it leaves people uncomfortable. It all makes for a very awkward social experience.
Exxis is someone with deep convictions toward the cause but can’t help doubting himself and his place in it at times. He envies those who chose to willingly put their lives on the line every day for others, whereas he can admit, at least to himself, that his position is both an honor and an obligation. DEnTac may not have taken the chance to save his life if it were not for the expectation that he would work for them (or the government at least) after his rehabilitation and training were complete. He is a billion-dollar investment (especially considering the years of therapy and replacement prostheses and implants they had to do as he grew and adjusted), not just a person. Being as young as he is and commanding his own team of agents is also a lot of pressure and responsibility, but this is better for him as he does have some control issues which make him feel like he should be in charge so that he knows he can ensure everyone else comes out alive.
Thankfully, his team is not as stringent as he is, considering he is the only ECO program agent on the team. They tease him and push him to lower his guard and not to be as strict about life and taking time off. He’s grateful to them and very protective of them because of this. Sure, he may not be able to interact with them without feeling out of place, but he recognizes and appreciates their attempts. Most agents don’t bother trying to be that close to their commanding officer. It’s helped to him to calm some of his behaviors, although he still feels he has to be the Responsible One in the room at all times, not only because he sees it as a duty, but also because if something happens, he feels he should be the one taking the blame, not his team, such as when their undercover operation was almost blown by his teammate choosing to save the life of an accidental witness who the cell was going to kill, but he and the team salvaged the operation. They got into trouble for not following protocol but Exxis stood up for the team and took the heat for it even if he was not the one who set off the domino effect in the first place.
Powers:
-- Superior strength (6x that of the average human)
-- Superior Speed (30 miles per hour top speed)
-- Cybernetic right eye capable x-ray vision, infrared, thermal readings, receiving text data, visual GPS, and telescopic zoom
-- Various sound and frequencies built into replaced voice box/vocal cords for disguise and undercover purposes
-- Enhanced healing of non-major injuries as bionanites speed up healing process. (Cuts, burns, bullet wounds, etc).
-- Enhanced hearing in right ear
-- Enhanced recall and data assimilation due to temporal lobe implant.
-- Hacking capabilities built into him through the fingertips of his right prosthetic which can come apart to create hook ups for linking into other technology and then using the implant in his brain to scan it and then hack into it.
-- Taser built into left hand.
-- Polyglot thanks to his brain having a translation filter built into it (only works on known languages of his world/Earth), which also provides ability to learn unknown languages through assimilation.
-- 12 years of martial arts and combat training preservice (7 years preservice, 5 years in service)
-- Experience with a variety of firearms and military weaponry (expert marksman)
-- Ability to use his own rechargeable batteries built into his prostheses to charge something else (only capable for small items, like a watch, phone, holo-pad (iPad like communication device), etc.)
Prostheses - All of Exxis prostheses and cybernetic implants are either powered by his own electrical synapses (such as the chips in his brain), or solar-powered with back up rechargeable batteries built into them for extended time away from sunlight. Prostheses are durable and therefore less easy to damage than his human-bits. His right arm and part of the chest area/ribcage, right leg below the knee, left arm below the elbow, right eye, and right ear are all prosthetic or fitted with a cybernetic implant.
Inventory:
Field Pack - A pack with various supplies such as a week’s worth of rations, field first aid kit, a multi-tool (screwdriver, hammer, knife, cork, allen key, pliers, etc, in one), flashlight with rechargeable battery, a pack of matches and aluminum foil.
Assimilation Device - Hard-light masking device that allows one to disguise themselves while undercover. Can be programed with either data or DNA to take on the shape and form of any person. Will feel real when touched.
Hair Care - Six month’s worth of hair care products because you gotta take care of those locs.
