EXXIS

Who I am, what I am, none of it matters if I fail at the one thing I was made for.

stats

CODENAME: Exxis

REAL NAME: DeMarcus Kalu CLASSIFIED
DOB: 02/20
AGE: 21-23 (depending on canon point)
CLASSIFICATION: Enhanced Cybernetic Operative 1763XS
OCCUPATION: DEnTac Operative
APPEARANCE:
5’11”/180cm. Athletic in build. Slight muscle definition but not much visible. Distinct, visible seam on the right side of his face, around his right eye, along his nose, going up into his scalp and down under his right ear. Skin on that side of his face is a shade or two darker than the rest of his face. Scar cuts through the right side of his mouth. Long thick dreadlocks that he keeps pulled back into a half-top twist or high ponytail. More seam-like scars along his right shoulder close to the arm socket, his right shin, and his left forearm, and a scar on his throat, usually hidden by his clothing. He also has scars and burns all over his body in the areas that are more organic, especially on his abdomen where they had to cut him open and repair damage to crucial organs after the bombing.

basics

A young, devoted agent of DEnTac, a national anti-terrorist organization. He underwent an experimental cybernetic prostheses program after an attack left him seriously injured as a child. As part of the program, he agreed to receive specialized training with the potential of being recruited into DEnTac or another government agency (such as the military). He’s been a full member since the age of 18 and was given his own team at the age of 21. He does not enjoy being a team leader, but he takes it very seriously. Maybe too seriously (he can be very anxious at the thought of failure).

He’s calm, thoughtful, sometimes to the point of overthinking situations (especially social ones), and tries to be Responsible and Mature in all situations. He wants people to see him as highly competent and trustworthy and has trouble with relaxing in less serious situations. Battles with self-doubt over whether he is more machine than human due to his regular “upgrades” that have occurred even after he was healed from his injuries as a child. Does take some pride in being an anti-terrorist agent, but also feels duty-bound to pay the debt he owes the government for saving his life to the tune of trillions of dollars.

21 or 23 (depending on canon point), bisexual with a very low sex drive who leans toward men. He does feel attraction toward people, but also has very little drive to do anything about it and is very self-conscious about rejection so avoids it. More likely to feel a romantic attraction than a sexual one, but still has no idea what he’s doing.

setting

Protechnoism is the name of the game, the new era of science and biology melding together to the point one may question which is which. Man becoming God. But with the rise and spread of advanced technology so goes the rise and spread of conflict. For where there is technology there are weapons of war.

The year is 2085 and it’s been 15 years since the rise of the Greymarch, a terrorist organization built of mercenary divisions that sell their services to the highest bidder, destabilizing regions, killing business executives and maintaining or upturning the status quo as they are paid. They don’t care where it is or who is in the crossfire, the Greymarch moves on. Terror as a business model has never been so profitable.
history

An attack that the Greymarch took credit for early in their creation was the bombing of the Farrow Memorial International Airport after the landing of the plane carrying the Ambassador of Savalia which was already dealing with civil unrest with neighboring countries during a highly intense national election season (2042). The Ambassador was gravely injured in the bombing, but survived. Many civilians using the airport that day were not as lucky, including the parents of current Agent Exxis of the Department of Enhanced Tactical Security (DEnTac). They had been returning home from a family vacation and awaiting their luggage at the turnstile when the bomb went off. His parents were killed and he was gravely injured, critically burning his face and right eye, losing his right leg and arm, and his left arm so badly damaged emergency surgery was needed to save it.

As per the wishes of his parents, Exxis was put into the custody of his godmother, Captain Evita Lansheer, who approved her godson for an experimental procedure that would graft cyberorganic prosthesis and regenerative bio-nanite cells to his body and into his vital organs that had been heavily damaged in the attack. This was a classified operation, with test subjects needed to see how well the prostheses would do on still growing bodies like those of children and teenagers. Exxis survived the procedure and recovered in months what should have taken years of rehabilitation but as part of the agreement he would receive specialized training.

Because of the classified nature of the program and the Department of Enhanced Tactical Security covering all of his medical expenses for the study, he was given a classified designation of Enhanced Cybernetic Operative (ECO) 1763XS (which he shortened to “Exxis” himself after Lansheer objected to the children involved in the program having no name to call themselves). He wasn’t allowed to be seen or spoken to by anyone outside of the program, government officials with high enough clearance levels, and his godmother, who agreed to a transfer into DEnTac to not only watch over her godson, but also to help with the training of the other subjects of the program. Exxis was 10 when he was admitted into the ECO program and became a full agent for DEnTac when he was 18.

Currently he’s part of a five-man squad that was investigating an unnamed t-merc (terrorist mercenary) group that was believed to be in contact with the Greymarch and close to integrating itself into the organization. They have one agent going undercover as a merchant who can provide them with munitions for their next job while Exxis provides nearby cover and surveillance.

His team managed to prevent the local solo cell from being recruited by Greymarch after the mission and arrested a Greymarch liaison in the process. But this achievement might come as a Pyrrhic victory as a month after arresting the liaison, who still has not provided any information, a coordinated cyber attack hits the southern coast of the US. The electrical grid gets shut down, accidents are happening across the states, and Exxis and his team are tasked with investigating two anonymous cells thought to be part of the attack and how they got the tech to create an eight state-wide blackout.

When his team finds out that government operatives may have been involved to intentionally cause mass panic and confusion in order to facilitate the escape of a dozen Greymarch members from various facilities in the southern US, he's not sure what to do. Because these people didn't go rogue and commit this crime on their own. No, they were being helped by the DOJ, even if the Secretary of Defense would never admit it. American lives had been lost, information compromised, and undercover operatives less out in the open to their own peril. All to protect whatever secrets these Greymarch members had about something the US government did.

The information Exxis' team had uncovered was so dangerous they could die over it and as their commanding officer, he had to decide what to do while the world order he'd believed in for most of his life fell apart.
personality

Smart, earnest, righteous, optimistic and self-conscious sums up Exxis nicely. He enjoys Active Literature (books that you read aloud and as you read the scene is acted out by a hologram in front of you) and video games (of the VR variety), but he loves his job most of all. It’s not a job he thinks he may have chosen for himself, but there is a strong sense of purpose for him in being a DEnTac agent. If what he does can help in any way to make sure no other child suffers from what he went through, then he will more than gladly go on any mission to achieve that. Losing his parents hurt him a great deal and he doesn’t know what he would have done if not for his godmother, Evita. You know, besides probably be dead or trapped in a bed somewhere in a foster home.

He does not make friends easily, primarily because he feels self-conscious about his looks. Because of the early model of many of his original prostheses and the cybernetic implants, parts of him don’t look or feel as natural as people who receive less severe implants of prostheses 9 years later. His one eye is obviously a replacement, his face in particular looks like he’s been through and accident and people who pay closer attention notice the distinctions between the two sides of his face. One of the reasons he grew his hair out is that it allows him to hide his face a bit more when he’s feeling particularly shy so people pay more attention to his locs than to his face. It also was one part of his body he knew was still natural, as it continued to grow and he takes great care of it because it symbolizes to him that he’s not entirely machine. But he has trouble talking to people his own age that weren’t part of the program with him and can stumble over his words. Sometimes he stares too hard without meaning to and it leaves people uncomfortable. It all makes for a very awkward social experience.

Exxis is someone with deep convictions toward the cause, but can’t help doubting himself and his place in it at times. He envies those who chose to willingly put their lives on the line each and every day for others, whereas he can admit, at least to himself, that his position is both an honor and an obligation. DEnTac may not have taken the chance to save his life if it were not for the expectation that he would work for them (or the government at least) after his rehabilitation and training were complete. He is a billion-dollar investment (especially considering the years of therapy and replacement prostheses and implants they had to do as he grew and adjusted), not just a person.

Still, this is his purpose, his mission. He doesn’t believe he can have a normal life with friends and days off where you go to the arcade or theater, so instead he puts everything into his duties as an agent. Enough so that he has a bit of a blind spot at times about them. If he thinks he has a morally righteous goal, he often pursues it to a fault and may judge others for not seeing its importance. And for Exxis there is nothing more important than taking down the Greymarch, every organization like them, whether at home or abroad, and preventing the loss of innocent lives. To him, others who put a price on those lives is suspect.

miscellaneous

  • Exxis’ favorite hobbies are going spelunking in caves or even rundown historical buildings and reading historical fiction novels (augmented reading versions involving holograms).
  • He gained a love for spelunking after a solo mission as a trainee left him trapped in an underground cavern for sixteen hours.
  • Can at times have a very rigid moral code which makes him come across as kind of self-righteous and judgmental, but when proved wrong or ignorant overcompensates in the opposite direction to apologizing for his missteps.
  • Exxis uses single-bud earbuds for listening to music as putting earbuds into his cybernetic ear causes feedback problems. He could just hook right into a music player and listen directly into his brain but it's too distracting.
  • Exxis’ prosthetics are solar-powered primarily, but also run on battery power when necessary (as often is the case when he’s been spelunking for longer than 12 hours).
  • Exxis was an only child, and his last grandparent alive (his paternal grandmother), died during his recovery years. His mother had an older brother and Exxis has three cousins, but he hasn’t had contact with them since before the incident.
